“ NCSPP 2025: Leap
into the Future”
Puerto Rican Crested Toad: Critically Endangered
How will we prepare our students for the professional practice in 2025?
As psychologists move beyond traditional roles of independent practice
and hospital/clinic-based practice focused on therapy and assessment,
how are we preparing our graduates? How do our traditional competencies
provide a base for non-traditional practice, and what competencies do
we not cover?
This conference focused on examining these questions
and providing answer to what professional psychology education and training
will need to look like in the year 2025. Will we be able to nimbly adjust
to these changes, or will be become an endangered species. The conference
brought together speakers who described what appear to
be the global trends that may impact our professional as well as the
trends
in practice and education. The conference included programs
and poster presentations of projects and programs
that
illustrate
innovations
in education and training as well as methods they have in teaching what
are sometimes called the emerging competencies—supervision, education,
consultation, and management—that appear to provide a bases for
non-traditional practice.
The conference hotel (Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza, http://www.condadoplaza.com/)
is situated between the ocean and a lagoon, and is in close proximity
to old San Juan.

2010
NCSPP Midwinter Meeting in Orlando
CCTC website to view Joint Program: http://www.psychtrainingcouncils.org/
Meeting
was held on February 10-13, 2010 (Wednesday – Saturday)
in sunny Orlando, Florida. We hd a uni
que
opportunity
this year to have two conferences in one, and both were held
at the
Disney Hilton Hotel. The first conference was our own NCSPP
conference on Wednesday and Thursday. The theme of our
conference was“Training for Integrated Healthcare,” and
we had several speakers and breakout sessions planned to help our programs
prepare students for working in the healthcare
environment. Psychologists’ involvement in primary care medical
settings is increasing and it appears that there will be a rising demand
for psychologists’ services in this arena in the near future.
Therefore, it is timely for us to develop curricula, practica, and
training programs that will meet this need. In addition to the training
part of the conference, we will also have our committee meetings and
a business meeting is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
For
the second conference we joined other psychology training
councils for the 2010 combined training council conference, which was
organize
d
by the Council of Chairs of Training Councils. We only met jointly
on one previous occasion (in 2000), so this was a unique opportunity
to meet with other educators and training directors (including internship
directors) to discuss many of our common concerns in quality doctoral
training and education in professional psychology. The theme of this
part of the conference was “Assuring Competence in the Next
Generation of Psychologists.” It was an excellent opportunity
to work on issues that are central to the training missions of all
councils.
